Caparisoned elephants dressed in ornate ceremonial blankets for processions, coronations, and state occasions were the most deliberate visual declaration a court could make. The trunk raised upward was the posture of honor, of abundance announced rather than concealed. The Durbar Pair borrows that posture and that ornament directly.
