During his Berlin years, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner spent several summer months on Fehmarn Island, northern Germany. Because of its rocky beach, the remote southeastern coast of the Baltic Sea island was rarely visited by other vacationers and offered the artist the ideal peace and seclusion for drawing nudes in the open air. In the numerous works created there, Kirchner
