Bronze and ceramic vessels were produced from as early as the Shang dynasty (1600 1045 BC), used for ritual ceremonies or to be buried in the tombs of the wealthiest members of Chinese society. This particular design is referred to as 'dui' and would have been used for grain or other foods. In an aged, verdigris bronze, it stands on three short legs in the form of
