In this review, we explore the complex interplay between sleep, metabolism, and aging across five core themes: (1) the role of sleep in maintaining optimal free radical levels, (2) whether ROS directly contribute to or mediate sleep disturbances in aging, (3) how age-related sleep disturbances may, in turn, contribute to impaired brain metabolism and exacerbate age-related changes, (4) the role of sleep, redox, and aging in peripheral systems, and (5) the evidence that improving mitochondrial redox potential restores sleep and slows aging, as well as the potential benefits of interventions like exercise, antioxidant-rich foods, supplements, and specialized diets that enhance sleep and/or metabolic efficiency, and their effects on aging markers (summarized in Figure 1)
Unlike other nutrients, the body lacks an active pathway for iron excretion, meaning that any excess iron consumed is stored within the body [25, 26], which can lead to serious diseases, including organ failure [26-28]
Yes, hyperthyroidism can affect the skin in several ways: Hyperpigmentation (melasma): Hormonal shifts, such as increased ACTH, may lead to darker patches of skin Excess sweating and rashes: Heat rashes often appear in skin folds due to higher sweat production Pretibial myxedema: A rare condition where the skin on the shins or tops of the feet becomes red, thickened, and swollen Associated autoimmune conditions: People with Graves disease may also develop vitiligo (loss of skin pigment) or alopecia areata (patchy hair loss) Functional medicine treatment considers both the thyroid imbalance and its skin manifestations, helping reduce symptoms and improve overall wellbeing
While the effects of peroxynitrite within the tumor microenvironment are not yet fully understood, it seems to contribute to immunosuppression and the protection of cancer from the immune system
Begin with lower concentrations (0.5-1%) and once-daily application
