This particular variety – the purple prickly pear – usually wins the race in terms of being the first variety to bloom every spring

I fractured this piece to show that even the most broken can become whole again

The architectural shapes and the way the shadows and light play on the leaves makes for unique visual interest. In my creative process, I like to experiment with varying palettes and asymmetrical cropping in my compositions to breathe new energy into a familiar subject. This giant blue agave and its companion, Desert Blues II, are examples of this technique.
